Solar geoengineering would create significant environmental, ethical and social challenges with poorly known local and regional consequences for critical resources such as water, ecosystem functioning, health and livelihoods. Social, economic, developmental, governmental, and inter-generational issues associated with solar geoengineering are commonly ignored. Taken together, I conclude that solar geoengineering constitutes dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system which, according to Article 2 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, must be prevented.
